Installed in the Sol Koffler Gallery at the Rhode Island School of Design as part of the Pixilerations international new media festival. Exhumation uses a novel interface in which the movement of sand over a specially designed podium results in the exposure and concealment of various images. The images themselves are taken from “Indigenous Races of the Earth”, a 19th century text widely cited for its use of images to advance the agenda of scientific racism. Much like Genesis, Exhumation uses the actions of the viewer to generate images, and subsequently implicate images and image-makers in the broader conversation of race and racism.
